Chattooga County, located in the northwest section of Georgia, was formed from parts of Floyd and Walker counties in 1838. It comprises an area of about 317 square miles or 202,880 acres.
Summerville, the county seat, is near the geographic center of Chattooga County. It is believed that Summerville was given its name because of its pisturesque environment set in a valley surrounded by mountains.
Chattooga County's main industry, textiles, began in 1846 when three entrepreneurs established the Trion Manufacturing Company. The three men named their factory and town in honor of their partnership. The Town of Trion grew up around the mill and is said to be one of the first towns in Georgia to have electricity for its industry and to have the first long-distance telephone in the state. Mount Vernon Mills, Inc boasts of being one of the World's largest producers of denim in one location.
